Hi, I am Terry Whin-Yates from Mr. Locksmith. Prevention is the number one thing. Get some WD-40, spray the heck out of it. WD-40 is a penetrating oil, but it’s also water displacement. However, if it is iced up give it a few bashes first, and then take your lock deicer. It’s isopropyl alcohol. Take the lock deicer, get it right in the keyhole, spread it all over it, and that should work where our key will now be able to go in and open it up. Prevention’s the best bet. Give it lots and lots of WD-40, and it works really, really well. On my own service truck, I don’t mind using a butane lighter blowtorch. Just give it a little twist, push, get a nice little flame. Just heat it right up. Again, I wouldn’t do this on a customer’s. This is my own, so I don’t care. This’ll get it all unfrozen. And be careful, the damn thing gets really, really hot. The other way is to get a lighter, match. I got this little propane torch. Just heat your key up, doesn’t take long. Heat it up, and then you can start putting it into the lock. The other way you have nothing, you’re just out there, heat it with your hand, hold it in your hand, get it all heated up. It takes a long time, but if you have nothing, just use your hand. So again, if you have absolutely nothing, heat it with your hand. Just hold it in your hand, heat it up.
